Project Overview
Kyan Health needed to expand mental health services into China, one of the most complex regulatory environments for healthcare data. The challenge: build infrastructure that meets strict Chinese data localization requirements while maintaining integration with the global platform.
The Challenge
Chinese data protection laws (PIPL, CSL, and healthcare-specific regulations) require sensitive data to stay within Chinese borders. Healthcare applications face additional scrutiny. The solution needed to be compliant, performant for Chinese users, and maintainable by a global engineering team.
What I Did
Led architecture design and implementation for the China expansion:
- Regulatory Analysis: Worked with legal counsel to understand exact requirements and design compliant architecture
- Infrastructure Design: Designed Alibaba Cloud infrastructure meeting data residency requirements while enabling necessary integration points
- Data Architecture: Implemented data partitioning strategy to keep Chinese user data local while maintaining global platform coherence
- Performance Optimization: Optimized for Chinese network conditions to deliver sub-100ms latency
Outcome
Successfully launched in the Chinese market with full regulatory compliance. Chinese users experience local-equivalent performance, data stays within required boundaries, and the global engineering team can maintain both systems efficiently. The architecture pattern is now being reused for other regional expansions.
