Zero-Downtime Platform Migration

Zero-Downtime Platform Migration

Led the complete migration of a mental health platform from legacy infrastructure to modern cloud-native architecture without service interruption.

Technologies Used

AWS Kubernetes PostgreSQL Node.js React

Key Features

Zero downtime during migration
60% reduction in infrastructure costs
Improved system reliability to 99.9% uptime
Modernized CI/CD pipeline
Enhanced security posture

Project Overview

Kyan Health’s mental health platform was running on aging infrastructure that couldn’t scale to meet growing demand. The challenge: migrate everything to modern cloud architecture without disrupting service for thousands of active users and their therapists.

The Challenge

The existing system had grown organically over years, accumulating technical debt and architectural decisions that made it difficult to scale. Downtime wasn’t an option - users depend on the platform for mental health support, and any interruption could impact care.

What I Did

Led the architecture design and migration execution, coordinating across engineering teams to ensure seamless transition:

  • Assessment & Planning: Comprehensive audit of existing systems to identify dependencies, risks, and migration sequence
  • Architecture Design: Designed cloud-native target architecture optimized for reliability and cost efficiency
  • Incremental Migration: Implemented blue-green deployment strategy to migrate services without downtime
  • Team Coordination: Worked with existing engineers to build internal expertise and ensure long-term maintainability

Outcome

The migration completed on schedule with zero service interruption. Infrastructure costs dropped 60%, system reliability improved to 99.9% uptime, and the platform now scales automatically to handle demand spikes. The engineering team has the tools and knowledge to maintain and extend the new architecture.
